Is Linux Welcomed in the Workplace?
by Chris on Jul.28, 2009, under Tech
How long has Linux been around? I mean seriously, I think we’re going on two decades of Linux existence at this point. I think it’s been around long enough now to prove itself quite useful in MANY different areas. The question I’d like to have answered is NOT “Is Linux ready for the desktop?”. It’s not even “Can Linux work in the workplace?” I know it’s ready and can do both. The real question is…. “Is Linux welcomed in Corporate America?”
I think it would be foolish to deny that we live and work in a Windows-dominated world. I think everyone pretty much knows that at this point. Sysadmins, Mac users, even my mom knows that. Corporate environments are for sure dominated with Windows-powered computers, yet why? Is it the fancy corporate support Microsoft provides? Seriously, have any of you called Microsoft for help with Windows on the desktop at work, ever? No, you probably call your “IT guy” or department. And usually they’re savvy enough to fix it without involving Microsoft. If they can’t, they re-image your PC and be done with it. (continue reading…)
Rockbox

So, here’s a little tech post for the blog. I’ve been hooked on this ROM replacement for my Sandisk Sansa e250 MP3 player for weeks now. I was tired of the default OS on this thing, not having the features I wanted so I checked out Rockbox over at http://www.rockbox.org and was delightfully surprised at how jam packed this OS is for my MP3 player. It’s an open source platform that is constantly being updated (daily!). Will play videos, do bookmarks, supports plugins, themes, song databases, playlists, and even has a speech engine built in for the menu system (great for in the car), and can play Doom! I highly suggest if you have an iPod or one of their other supported MP3 players that you install a copy of this replacement OS on your device. Check out their supported device list and features list.
