And then there were two…

Just when I thought the Nokia N900 was the uber-phone to beat all phones…Motorola releases something that should give it quite a good run for the money. This thing looks sweet. Even has a bigger screen and better resolution than the N900. I honestly thought about canceling my pre-order for the N900 once I started reading more about the Droid, but I have a better plan.
I still think the Nokia N900 is a better choice for me. I prefer the more openness of the platform, and the fact that it’s running an OS which is closer to what you’d find on a desktop than Android is. Android is running Linux, but with a fancy framework which allows pseudo-java applications to run on it. Where as Maemo 5 is based off Debian and is all Linux.
The Droid will have a much better selection of apps to choose from since Android has been out for quite a while now, but the openness of the Maemo 5 platform will probably mean that we’ll see a lot of desktop apps get ported to the Nokia N900. Also, there’s still quite a bit of hardware in the N900 that isn’t fully utilized from what I hear. I haven’t seen any mention of any apps using the front camera (yes, the N900 actually has two built-in cameras). The FM radio receiver and transmitter still need some more app lovin’, but I have seen a nice FM radio application that exists out there. And there’s talk about getting bluetooth keyboards and mice working on the n900, which would truly make this a pocket computer that you can use at your desk too. I don’t see the Droid having that sort of functionality any time soon.
Nonetheless, they’re both cool phones, which is why I’m actually going to buy both of them. Heh, only not both for me. I’m probably going to pre-order a Droid for the wife, and still keep the N900 for myself. She’s up for a new phone too, and I showed her the Droid’s functions and mapping stuff and she approved!
